This book is one patient’s sometimes humorous account of living with and being treated for cancer which he likens to having a mistress. Headaches that began in June of 2009 were not diagnosed as Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma until mid December. Given odds of 50/50 by his oncologist he describes the tests, bone marrow biopsies and treatments which included six cycles of R-CHOP, four spinal infusions with other drugs and, while in remission, three 28-day cycles of Revlimid (AKA Lenalidomide). Starting with the R-CHOP treatments he describes the day to day side effects of chemotherapy and his attempts to deal with them. The remainder of the book describes the aftermath of treatment which lasts much longer than one would normally expect.

I finished reading this book last night. It was a fairly quick, interesting and entertaining read.I enjoy this author's voice, he is a combination of quirky and wonkish. I believe anyone who has endured cancer therapy, or who has a loved one who has endured cancer therapy, would find this book helpful and, in a way, comforting.
My highest praise would be that for the first quarter of the book, I felt afraid. I felt afraid for the author - a tangible, terrible emotion. And I felt this even though I knew the ending of the story. So for that alone, I would have to say this book worked very very well for me.

I recently read "My Secret Lymphoma" and found it to be a most enjoyable read. I happen to know the author so had the advantage of "hearing" his words and truly appreciating his very dry wit. I appreciate his keeping his sense of humor throughout the experience and feel it was written well enough for anyone to comprehend. Because it was a day to day blog it truly gave a very realistic picture of dealing with the illness. I have since been diagnosed with cancer myself (not lymphoma) and am going through many of the experiences that Phil endured and remembering his comments and feelings have helped me deal with mine. I recommend this book to anyone who would like to know how it feels to be in cancer treatment or knows someone who is or has been through a similar experience. All in all a very good read!!! This book cannot help but be a precious find for anyone unfortunate enough to be fighting cancer. The author (disclaimer I'm a relative) does an incredible job of describing his experience from the discovery of the disease, through the travails of treatment, to remission and drug testing. Phil has a great ability to convey both the building tension of key moments, such as receiving test results, as well as his day-to-day struggle in dealing with the effects of the chemo, often with a note of humor. It is all too easy for one to imagine being in his shoes, and as the reader reaches the end of Phil's story he/she is left wishing for just one more blog entry.
